This Is The Rarest Limited Edition N64 Console
Many gamers have warm memories of the Nintendo 64. The N64 game library contains a wealth of hidden gems, and the console itself came in all kinds of cool variants. However, the rarest version of the Nintendo 64 distanced itself from its roots upon its original release: the Hyundai Comboy 64.
The Hyundai Comboy 64 came into existence due to a distribution issue in Korea. According to Console Variations, an import ban from Japan nearly prevented the Nintendo 64 from releasing in South Korea. To skirt this issue, Hyundai distributed the console instead. This move also necessitated a name change, resulting in the system's bizarre moniker.
The import ban was reportedly lifted shortly after production began on the Comboy, which resulted in the actual Nintendo 64 seeing an official release in South Korea. The short production run of the Comboy 64 made the console extremely rare and valuable to collectors. So, how difficult it is to find one of these in the wild, let alone purchase one?
Just how rare is the Comboy 64?
Some fans have discovered simply tracking one of these elusive consoles down does not guarantee you'll have the opportunity to buy one. Collectors tend to want to hang onto these systems. Even when a Hyundai Comboy 64 does go on sale, sellers have priced them as high as $999.
It may not even matter if you have the money to purchase a Comboy 64. When Console Variations discovered one in Korea, the team was astonished when the shop owner refused to sell it, as "there is a lot of pride connected to the Comboy in Korea and owning one as a Korean Collector is a big thing." Console Variations offered to pay big bucks to take a Comboy home, but ultimately left empty-handed.
While the Comboy 64 isn't quite as rare as MTV's limited edition GameCubes, the odds of getting your hands on this piece of gaming history in America are still slim to none.
