Will The Xbox Series X Get Its Own DualSense Controller?

Xbox might be looking to upgrade its Xbox Series X|S controller. Microsoft just recently launched a survey to ask Xbox Series X|S owners if they would be interested in a controller with the features of the PlayStation 5's DualSense. The PS5 DualSense has been very well received since its debut.

In fact, Xbox head Phil Spencer has even praised the DualSense controller. In an interview with The Verge, Spencer stated, "I think for all of us in the industry, we should learn from each other and the innovation that we all push on, whether it's distribution of business model like Game Pass, or controller tech[.]" This could have been an early hint that Microsoft was planning to follow Sony's example, with this new survey being another hint.

The survey asked Xbox gamers if they wanted the PlayStation 5 DualSense features on the controllers that came with the new generation of Microsoft consoles. Reddit did what Reddit does. One user went out of their way to list a number of patents from Microsoft that lend further credence to the theory that Microsoft is developing a controller with haptic feedback, similar to the DualSense. Microsoft may have to tread carefully so that it does not violate Sony's patents.

The rumor mill is turning

Xbox enthusiasts are convinced that they might be seeing a new Xbox controller sooner rather than later. Redditors have toyed around with the idea of an Xbox controller with advanced haptic feedback being released as the Xbox Elite Series 3 controller. One user mentioned that there were four years between the first Xbox Elite controller and the second. Still, another Redditor is convinced that Phil Spencer's praise for the DualSense may indicate that Xbox may have a similar controller coming out even sooner than that.

If Microsoft does decide to move forward with its own version of the DualSense, it could be a while. The company would have to design, market and eventually ship out the product — so Xbox gamers might be waiting a couple of years. It is difficult to predict how quickly Microsoft will be to act, or if the survey is just a formality and the controller is already on its way.

It's worth remembering that the Xbox Series X|S is still young. Microsoft could also be planning to release the new controller when it releases a newer and more refined version of the Xbox Series X|S in the future.
