Star Trek: Resurgence - What We Know So Far

The 2021 Game Awards was the site of tons of new video game announcements that have people talking — like "Sonic Frontiers" — but one in particular has fans excited. "Star Trek: Resurgence," an interactive narrative-driven game based on the classic science fiction franchise, will be developed by Dramatic Labs. The development team comprises of several veterans of the famous Telltale Games studio that produced other narrative-based games, such as "Batman: The Telltale Series," "The Walking Dead: The Telltale Series," and "The Wolf Among Us," among others.

Without a doubt, "Star Trek: Resurgence" is an ambitious first project for Dramatic Labs. The game will feature a cast of characters new to the Star Trek franchise, including iconic characters the fandom already knows and loves, such as Spock. The game's reveal at The Game Awards featured everything to get fans excited, including a release date, trailer, and some looks at the game's plot.

Does Star Trek: Resurgence have a release date?

As of right now, no specific release date for "Star Trek: Resurgence" is available. However, Trekkies do have a time frame to watch out for. "Star Trek: Resurgence" is currently set to release in the spring of 2022, as confirmed by the game's official trailer. Assuming the game's development doesn't run into any unexpected complications, gamers can expect it to be released sometime after March. That means "Resurgence" could arrive anywhere from late Q1 to early Q2.

Upon its eventual release, "Star Trek: Resurgence" will be available on multiple platforms across multiple generations, including the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PlayStation5, Xbox Series X|S, and on the Epic Games Store on PC. For the most part, gamers of all varieties will get to enjoy the game. Unfortunately, gamers on the Nintendo Switch will not have access to the game when it launches and can only hope for a port later down the line.

Does Star Trek: Resurgence have a trailer?

The official trailer for "Star Trek: Resurgence" was also revealed as part of The 2021 Game Awards on Dec. 9. In the trailer's opening shot, viewers are introduced to Crewperson Carter Diaz of the U.S.S. Resolute, who has bold ambitions when it comes to exploring the universe. Diaz's story is intercut with that of First Officer Jara Rydek, a high ranking member of the Resolute who has worked her entire life to have the opportunity to one day captain her own ship.

In the trailer, viewers are given glimpses of the story of "Star Trek: Resurgence" and its gameplay mechanics, as well as the characters players will meet on their journey through the final frontier. Prior to the its end, the trailer gives away its biggest character reveal — none other than Captain Spock himself, in the likeness of Leonard Nimoy, who originated the role. Nimoy unfortunately died in 2015, but seeing him in the trailer likely gave Trekkies the world over instant goosebumps. Spock's inclusion also solidifies the game as part of Star Trek's existing cannon, as opposed to being a loosely connected spin-off.

What will the plot in Star Trek: Resurgence be like?

"Star Trek: Resurgence" is set in the year 2380, immediately following "Star Trek: The Next Generation." The game's plot follows Carter Diaz and Jara Rydek as they attempt to "unravel a sinister mystery involving two alien civilizations on the brink of war." On the game's official site, "Star Trek: Resurgence" is considered to be "a narrative adventure game featuring dialog choices, relationship building, and exploration." The game will mostly be a selection of choices, much in the vein of past titles developed by Telltale Games. This format makes sense, considering that over 20 employees at Dramatic Labs were previously employed by Telltale.

It is implied that the story of "Star Trek: Resurgence" will feature branching storylines dependent upon which options the player makes during their playthrough, making the game open-ended in how each storyline plays out. Other than these small tidbits of information, Dramatic Labs has kept intricate details pertaining to the plot close to its chest.
