The Stunning Amount Of Endings The Quarry Actually Has

"The Quarry" is the latest title from the legendary horror studio Supermassive Games. It's set in upstate New York where a group of nine teenage counselors at a summer camp have ended up staying longer than they were supposed to, only to end up being hunted by the murderous locals. The game is set to feature a large cast of television and film stars, which – when coupled with Supermassive's signature, hyper-realistic graphics – promises to provide a gory and cinematic experience that's perfect for horror aficionados.

Fans of past Supermassive titles such as "The Dark Pictures Anthology" and "Man of Medan" will know that a major part of the studio's formula is to force the player into making choices that have lasting effects in the game, altering everything from minor set changes to who lives and who dies. Players will also receive dramatically different endings depending on what choices they made along the way. These endings are completely unique, unlike the color-coded endings from games like "Mass Effect 3." It seems that none of Supermassive's previous games hold a candle to the number of different endings the player could potentially unlock in "The Quarry," however.

The Quarry will have 186 different endings

The description on the official "Quarry" website states, "you control the fates of all nine camp counselors as their party plans unravel into an unpredictable night of horror. With life-or-death decisions around every turn, the choices you make will determine how the story unfolds." That's actually kind of underselling the extent of the game's versatility, though.

In a conversation with IGN, Supermassive Games' writer and director Will Byles stated that the script for the game is over 1,000 pages and that the crew had to shoot about 50 pages a day. This was largely because they would have to reshoot similar scenes, but with minor adjustments made based on decisions that the player would have made earlier in the game. Each of the game's nine playable characters has their own storyline that changes based off the decisions the player makes along the way, "We worked out 186 different endings for those characters," he said (2:02) "Not just alive or dead, a whole variation of things that can happen to them... the stories that they have all the way through are massively varied." This makes it seem likely that no two playthroughs will ever be quite the same for most players since even minor changes could lead to entirely different outcomes.
