The original "Alone in the Dark" released in 1992 to praise from critics and love from fans. It is still remembered today as one of the best and most influential horror games of all time. It has received several sequels over the years, some which were considered solid follow-ups and others which are best left forgotten. It also received an infamous movie adaptation that is often ranked as one of the worst live-action video game movies ever made. The series has been in need of fresh blood for quite some time, and now, a series of leaks have revealed the existence of a new installment.

Rumors initially began to circulate when Rely on Horror reported on leaks saying that THQ Nordic, which had previously acquired the rights to the franchise, would soon be announcing a new game in the series. Bloody Disgusting subsequently expanded on the story, but nobody could have been prepared for what came next.

Known leaker The Snitch tweeted a line from the "Alone in the Dark" movie, which was taken as a hint that a new game was on the way. This led to speculation from Bloody Disgusting that the new game would be announced at this year's Gamescom, which is being held later this month. However, fans didn't have to wait that long.

The Alone in the Dark remake is coming

The various leaks and rumors were quickly followed up today when listings for the game appeared on Amazon. The retailer describes the game as "psychological horror meets Southern Gothic" and offers some hints about the plot. The game will apparently take place in the southern United States in the 1920s and have players exploring a mansion-turned-mental asylum. The listing also refers to the game "a love letter to the 90's cult classic horror game." The release date provided is December 31, 2022, although it's currently unclear if this is a true release date or just a placeholder. According to the Amazon listing, the game will be available for PC, Xbox Series X|S, and the PS5.

Aesthetic Gamer took to Twitter shortly after the news broke to confirm some of the rumors surrounding the game itself. He offered screenshots of the game and further details about its development and story. It seems the new "Alone in the Dark" game will be a remake of the original with a story from Mikael Hedberg, the writer of "SOMA" and "Amnesia: The Dark Descent," two games that are widely considered to be among the greatest horror games of all time.

Needless to say, fans are extremely hyped for this news. Some can't seem to believe it's happening. Others are struck by the screenshots and the setting. Still others just can't contain their excitement and thirst for details about what the new game will include.

Fortunately for fans, they likely won't have to wait long for more. Rather than being announced at Gamescom, Aesthetic Gamer claims THQ Nordic will be making an announcement later today. VGC predicts that this reveal will occur during a digital showcase that is scheduled to take place at 3 PM ET (Noon PT).
