"God of War Ragnarok" is a massive game, both in terms of the sheer scope of its design and the actual world that Santa Monica Studios has created. It takes the already impressive realm of Midgard based on Norse mythology that was established in the 2018 reboot of the franchise and gives players even more room to explore. Not only that, but players can now experience all nine of the Norse realms across the game's 20-40 hour campaign. Early reviews of "Ragnarok" all seemed to agree that while the game bore an abundance of similarities to its predecessor, it also improved on the game's systems in nearly every way. One of the elements that has returned with this new coat of polish is the crafting resources that the player must uncover and use to upgrade Kratos and Atreus' gear.

Two of the most important of these resources are the Frozen Flames and Chaos Flames. Those who played the 2018 "God of War" will remember that these are exceedingly rare resources that allow Kratos to upgrade his Leviathan Axe and Chaos Blades, granting him access to new tiers of abilities while using them. Just like in the first game, both of these resources are story locked, so players won't be able to find them all at the beginning. Most of them are granted as rewards for defeating bosses or progressing to certain points in the story. Players will want to make sure they don't miss any of these, but they won't have to spend an abundance of time searching the world for them as they can all be found simply by playing the campaign. There is one Frozen Flame and one Chaos Flame that does have to be pieced together, however. After defeating major enemies throughout the game, the player will sometimes be rewarded with items called Frozen Sparks and Chaos Sparks. Once players have six Frozen Sparks they can join them together to create a Frozen Flame, while six Chaos Sparks make a Chaos Flame. Just be careful to always loot major enemies. Collecting Frozen Flames and Chaos Flames is essential to upgrading Kratos' weapons and ensuring that he is powerful enough for the tasks ahead.

Once the player has received a Frozen Flame or Chaos Flame, they can then take it to either Brok or Sindri and have them use it to upgrade the associated weapon. Unlike other upgrades in the game, this does not require Hacksilver or any other additional resources.
