Subnautica Is The Epic Games Store's First Free Game

Why not keep the free game train rolling? We already told you earlier about a way you can get Assassin's Creed: Odyssey for free. Now you can add Subnautica to your PC game collection, too. All you have to do is download the Epic Launcher.

Wait, the Epic Launcher has more than just Fortnite in it now? As a matter of fact, it does.

Epic recently opened a store it calls, quite appropriate, the Epic Games Store. It's located inside the Epic Launcher and, while it's barebones at the moment, it has the potential to grow over time. That growth will inevitably be fueled by everyone who plays Fortnite, but in case that's not enough, Epic also has another trick up its sleeve: free games.

Subnautica is the first one, and it's available to download today. It'll only be available for two weeks, though. And over the course of the next year, Epic will give a free game away every two weeks. It's almost like getting those free titles from Xbox Live Games with Gold or PlayStation Plus, except you don't have to pay for a subscription.

We're looking forward to seeing how this free games promotion helps the Epic Games Store. Epic certainly has a lot on its plate right now, with Fortnite, Unreal Engine, and now the Epic Games Store taking up the majority of its time. And the company just recently vowed to make its cross-platform development frameworks available for free, too. The Epic Games Store no longer has the best profit split with developers, having been usurped by the Discord Store late last week. But it definitely feels that, in terms of Steam challengers, the Epic Games Store has the most momentum behind it.

Anyway, back to SubnauticaPC Gamer's Philippa Warr called it her "favourite game of the last five years," and if that's not a ringing endorsement, we don't know what is. Why not go pick it up? And keep your eyes on the Epic Games Store over the next twelve months. More free games are on the way.
