Debate Rages Over Taylor Swift's Fortnite 'Easter Egg'

Taylor Swift has just confirmed that she's yet another celebrity obsessed with "Fortnite." At least, that's what some people seem to think. "Fortnight" is the opening track of Swift's latest album, "The Tortured Poets Department," and even though on the surface the song appears to be about a heated two-week love affair, the deeper meaning is all about Epic Games' biggest hit.

People probably would have made "Fortnight" or "Fortnight" jokes regardless of the song's actual content, but it really does seem like Swift knew the comparisons would come up. After all, she got Post Malone to feature on the track, and fans have been dying for him to get his own "Fortnite" skin. He's said that he hates the game, but maybe his partnership with Swift is his way of finally extending an olive branch  — or  at least, that's how one fan theory goes.

Jokes about the song's relationship to the game were bound to crop up, but now that fans have been digging into the lyrics, the jokes are quickly approaching something like a full-blown conspiracy theory. A popular video from content creator Xen Bryson breaks down the lyrics of the song to try to prove a connection. In particular, he points to one lyric, "And for a fortnight there we were, forever running / 'Til you sometimes ask about the weather," as being obviously about players running around the game map and trying to avoid the storm that ends each match.

Gamers are reading into all the "secret" messages about "Fortnite" that Swift supposedly included in the song, and they're coming away with the impression that she clearly knows her stuff. But that leads to another debate: Is she such an expert because she loves the game, or is it actually because she resents it for putting a damper on her love life?

More evidence that Taylor's thinking about Fornite

If "Fortnight" actually is a sly nod to the video game, then it nicely ties in with the rest of the album's themes. Most of the songs on "The Tortured Poets Department" are about a relationship that got hot and heavy quickly before falling apart spectacularly. Video games weren't the cause of the breakup, but some lyrics on another track indicate that Swift's former partner was indeed a gamer.

"So High School" is set during the early days of the relationship, when the budding feelings were taking Swift back to her younger days. In this song, she sings, "Touch me while your bros play 'Grand Theft Auto'." These lyrics make it explicitly clear that Swift's boyfriend plays video games, so it's not much of a stretch to assume he might partake in a round or two of "Fortnite."

Fans of both "Fortnite" and Swift are hoping her ex didn't entire ruin her opinion of the game. After all, they've been avidly awaiting an announcement about Swift joining the "Fortnite" Festival as a performer. This song's release would have been the perfect time for Swift to make that announcement, but unfortunately fans are still waiting. Luckily for them, they have plenty of lyrics to dig into, and since Swift knows exactly what they're up to, she's sure to include odd little jokes like this in every one of her new albums.
