GTA 6 Leonida Map Size And Changes: Everything Rockstar Has Confirmed
After Netflix's "Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look" event showed us a hefty bunch of gameplay and other goodies, there's just one major thing fans want to know before they get to dive in the game on November 19, 2026. Since everything we know about "GTA VI" indicates that the game will be huge, the fandom is no doubt curious about just how huge it will be — by which we mean, how big its map will be.
Fortunately, there is some information about the subject, even though Rockstar Games hasn't officially confirmed anything solid quite yet. Perhaps the best information that we've received straight from the horse's mouth comes courtesy of Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson, who addressed the map situation in a new interview with IGN. There, he compared the "GTA VI" world to the massive map of the previous Rockstar game, the almost too good to be true "Red Dead Redemption 2."
"There is a whole other world in 'Red Dead Redemption 2,' yes," Nelson said. "'GTA VI' is very much like that. There's a whole lot of stuff that you discover emergently that we're not necessarily directing you to through objectives or blips or icons on a map as well. If you take a bit of time and explore you will be rewarded — a lot. It's a big map, a very big map."
As for exactly how big the map is, YouTuber TGG has apparently seen three hours of "GTA VI" material and claims that it's roughly two times the size of the "GTA V" one, and Vice City alone is twice as big as Los Santos was in the previous game. If true, that's a very big map, indeed.
The exact size of the GTA 6 map is officially unconfirmed by Rockstar, but clearly unprecedented in the franchise
TGG's report about the map's size is certainly promising and seems to make sense, but as always, we'll wait until official confirmation from the studio before commencing the happy dance. Fortunately, Rob Nelson has spoken in similar tones about the size of the "GTA VI" playground. However, more than the map's size, he seems to be enthusiastic about the things it actually contains.
"With ['Red Dead Redemption 2'] we took the time necessary to take advantage of that generation of hardware to maximize the quality of our open world population, design, and gameplay so that when you were riding from here to there in-game, you were constantly getting distracted and pulled in different directions," Nelson said to IGN. "'GTA VI' is a continuation of our team pushing in this direction — doing everything we possibly can to create the largest, deepest, most densely populated and complex world we have ever built for people to get lost in."
All those superlatives indicate that whatever the size of the map will ultimately turn out to be, it'll be bigger and fuller than anything we've seen from Rockstar Games so far. In other words, fans will be in for a supersized treat that will no doubt bode well for the likely inevitable "GTA VI Online."
