Is Jason An Undercover Cop? Testing GTA 6's Biggest Story Theory Against The Evidence

At the same time the "Grand Theft Auto 6: An Extended Look" debuted on Netflix, Rockstar Games confirmed a bunch of details about "GTA 6." One fan theory regarding protagonist Jason Duval, however, remains unconfirmed. Thus far, Jason has drawn significant attention, with fans registering their distaste for his voice actor as well as positing several theories about his role in the game. He's one half of a criminal duo that also includes Lucia Caminos, but many fans suspect there's more to his story. Theories began to ramp up after the first "GTA 6" trailer on December 4, 2023, with many speculating that Jason was an undercover cop, or at least somehow connected to law enforcement.

The theory emerged following the release of promotional artwork for "GTA 6" in which Lucia and Jason sit on the hood of a car. As Redditor adotang put it, "The pants he's wearing somewhat resemble the duty slacks worn by Miami-Dade PD SWAT officers." A "General Orders" document from the South Miami Police Department does indeed state "When wearing the training uniform in public, team members will adhere to the following: 1. Team members will wear green BDU pants." What is Jason wearing in the promo artwork? Olive green pants that look strikingly similar to the BDU, or Battle Dress Uniform, pants mentioned in the document.

It's pretty thin evidence, especially when you consider that another Redditor pointed out the pants could simply be a reference to Claude, the cargo-panted protagonist of "Grand Theft Auto 3." Meanwhile, Rockstar hasn't officially addressed any fan theories regarding Jason. Yet the undercover cop theory has persisted.

"Grand Theft Auto 6" will see players switch between Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos in what's been designed as a Bonnie and Clyde-like crime adventure story. That should be enough to excite fans, but it seems many are hoping for an extra layer to the narrative via a twist that reveals Jason as a narc.

The first trailer for "GTA 6" was released in December 2023, and began with Lucia in some sort of correctional facility being questioned by a counselor. "Do you know why you're here?" asks the counselor, to which Lucia responds, "Bad luck, I guess." The fact that Lucia was shown in the institution and not Jason suggested to some that he was potentially working with law enforcement, with Lucia's "Bad luck" line interpreted as referring to some sort of betrayal.

Trailer 2 seemed to throw cold water on the whole thing, however. Released in May 2025, it shows Jason meeting Lucia upon her release from prison. Why would they be reuniting if he was the one that put her there? Regardless, the theorists kept at it, pointing to how the correctional officer at the prison appears to recognize Jason and asking why that would be unless he was working with law enforcement. Theorists also highlight another brief moment from the trailer in which one character asks his compatriot whether Jason is "a fed." Perhaps this was an example of Rockstar Games foreshadowing an eventual reveal? Again, none of this proves anything and is tenuous at best.

Rockstar's website confirms Jason Duval is ex-military, lending credence to the idea that he, like many former soldiers, joined law enforcement upon discharge. Again, it's not exactly proof, but interesting nonetheless. As is the theory that footage from "Grand Theft Auto 6: An Extended Look" shows Jason only shooting the tires of cop cars to avoid revealing a system that penalizes the character for directly targeting police as an undercover officer.

Perhaps the most convincing piece of evidence for Jason being involved with police, however, is a screenshot from the game (seen above) in which the character sits in a car alongside Brian Heder while wearing a white t-shirt under a bulletproof vest and a backwards cap. In the very first trailer for "GTA 6," we see someone with Jason's build also wearing a white t-shirt, bulletproof vest, and backwards cap taking part in a police raid. Even then, however, this could be explained in any number of ways that don't involve Jason being a cop. "GTA 5," for example, included multiple missions wherein the protagonists worked side by side with the authorities, as did previous games in the franchise.

As such, it's unsurprising that not everyone is convinced by the Jason-is-an-undercover-cop theory. One Reddit user wrote, "How could he ever be an undercover cop when you can literally kill civilians when playing with him?!" It's a fair point, but as another user points out, "Maybe [he] isn't an undercover cop the whole game but the cops try to persuade him to switch teams in the later chapters." Again, this is all speculation, and we wont know for sure until the game launches on November 19, 2026.
