These days, the console wars are different from the days of the Super Nintendo vs Sega Genesis or PlayStation vs Nintendo 64. While there are some subtle differences between the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, you're going to get roughly the same experience playing a game on either system.

By and large, the biggest difference between the two systems is the controller. Some people prefer the Xbox controller with its offset analog sticks, but the DualSense controller has haptic feedback and adaptive triggers. Plus, the DualSense controller is also available in a variety of colors, from classic black and white variants to more colorful options for players who want to add a little spice or personal expression to their gaming sessions.

But if you really want to spice things up, you can invest in one of the many limited edition DualSense controllers released by Sony over the years. Even now, six years in, new DualSense variants are being released to celebrate and promote high-profile games and collaborations.

Here are five of our favorite limited edition DualSense controllers.

Wolverine

The newest entry on this list is one of the most gorgeous. While some players decry the linear nature and relatively shallow combat of "Marvel's Wolverine," others appreciate its tight focus on storytelling momentum and absolutely brutal violence of the title character's fighting style. Personally, I'm a huge fan.

To build hype for the Insomniac-developed superhero game, Sony went all out with two console and controller variations. The designs are identical, but the color schemes are different. One features black and grey, like Wolverine's adamantium-coated skeleton or his X-Force costume, while the other replaces the grey with a bold yellow, like his classic comic book costume. For my money, the yellow version is superior.

The asymmetrical design on the controller has a trio of claw marks from a righteous swipe of Wolverine's claws. While I generally prefer a more symmetrical style, the unique look works well here, as does the color. It's particularly cool to have yellow analog sticks for that extra bit of comic book flavor. I also enjoy the extra use of yellow on the classic PlayStation face button shapes.

Death Stranding 2

When "Death Stranding 2" launched in 2025, it released alongside a new limited edition DualSense variant themed on the game. This controller is fairly subtle with its design sensibilities, though it still had plenty of character and granular details for players to enjoy.

The unit is black with some decal-style details on the handles and an orange Drawbridge logo across the Touchpad. The game's title is also written on the back of the controller. My favorite detail, though, can be found on the face buttons, which have a subtle ring around them, a nice little touch that's not on the normal DualSense. It looks so natural on the "Death Stranding 2" version, though, it makes me wish all DualSense controllers had this detail.

As for the game itself, maybe this is a hot take, but I'm of the opinion that "Death Stranding 2" is a masterpiece and Hideo Kojima's greatest work since 2001's "Metal Gear Solid 2," though everyone has their own opinions on Kojima's greatest games. It takes everything that the original game did and improves on it, streamlining some aspects while expanding on others. Combat is better, navigation is easier to use, and the story is both grander and more digestible. I don't know if there's going to be a "Death Stranding 3," but even if such a game never comes to pass, one gets the sense Kojima said everything he wanted to say with "Death Stranding 2."

PlayStation 30th Anniversary

The only entry on this list not based on a single video game, the PlayStation 30th Anniversary DualSense was just one part of Sony's commemoration of three decades of PlayStation. The collection also included grey variants of the PS5 console and PlayStation Portal handheld device, and even a 400-page coffee table book about all things PlayStation.

At a glance, the 30th Anniversary DualSense looks like a regular DualSense with the classic PlayStation grey coloring, but there's more to it than that. While mostly grey, it has subtle color highlights that make a huge difference. The PS button in the bottom center of the controller uses the classic colors of the original PlayStation logo, and the face buttons make use of the colors that were present on previous PlayStation controllers but conspicuously absent on other versions of the DualSense.

In my opinion, the monochrome face buttons on the regular DualSense were a mistake. While the shapes are one way of identifying the buttons, the colors are another, so why would Sony make a decision to make their buttons less distinct? The PlayStation 5 is pretty devoid of color all around, so having just a little extra color to offset all that black-and-white would have gone a long way towards giving the PS5 a little extra pizzazz.

God of War: Ragnarok

After the blockbuster success of the 2018 "God of War" revival that reinvented the series for the PS4 era, a sequel was immediately put into development. The resultant game, "God of War: Ragnarok," released in 2022, and with it came a new DualSense variant.

This controller features a subtle-yet-striking design. Most immediately noticeable is the color scheme, which uses a mix of white and blue to convey the icy Nordic setting of the game. Alas, the analog sticks and buttons don't get any color change. I would have liked for them to be white to mix with the rest of the controller, though I suppose the best part about the color black is that it naturally fits in with any color scheme.

A pair of howling wolves are portrayed on the touchpad, representing the grieving Kratos and Atreus as they attempt to navigate the Norse end of days while reconciling their difficult relationship and loss of their matriarch, Faye. If you're more into the classic "God of War" games, then there's another controller based on the Greek Saga, as the fans call it. This one uses white and red as its main colors and adorns the controller with a recreation of Kratos' face tattoo. So, whichever "God of War" floats your boat, there's a special edition DualSense controller for you.

Astro Bot

Way back in 2013, the PlayStation 4 launched with a pack-in game, called "The Playroom," which showed off the functions of the hardware while introducing a new mascot for PlayStation, an adorable little robot called Astro Bot. Fast forward to 2024, and the series evolved from a series of tech demos to a full-length 3D platformer, simply called "Astro Bot." To celebrate the occasion, the game got its own limited edition DualSense controller, based on the title character itself.

The "Astro Bot" controller looks like the absolute best version of the DualSense controller. In fact, if it wasn't for the inclusion of Astro's iconic blue eyes emblazoned across the touchpad, you could easily mistake this for merely a generic premium DualSense. I say "generic," but that's not a criticism in this case. The white and blue color scheme looks luxurious and high-tech, and I especially enjoy the use of blue on the face buttons, as well as the fact that the analog sticks are now white, rather than the usual black.

The controller also has a metallic blue finish on the handles, which further evokes the Astro character and his blue highlights. Overall, it's a gorgeous controller that's valuable as a gaming controller, as a collector's item, and as a beautiful art piece for your shelf.
