Will GTA 6 Actually Run At 60 FPS On Consoles? What We Know So Far

At launch on Nov. 19, 2026, "Grand Theft Auto 6" will be released — but only on the current-generation consoles: the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. While PC players might be able to hop into Leonida quicker than anticipated, Rockstar's new game will be console-exclusive for the first few months of its life. This puts the console versions under an even more precise microscope, and many players are necessarily curious about how "GTA 6" will run on PS5 and Xbox.

From the start of the "GTA 6" hype train, there's been concern that the game wouldn't be able to reach 60 frames per second (FPS), which has become a gold standard for AAA titles in the eyes of some players. Of course, few AAA games don't offer the same level of detail and scale that "GTA 6" does, and that's where the concerns lie. Is the game is taking too big a bite for what the hardware can handle? A recent report and some statements from Rockstar Games shed additional light on the launch performance of "GTA 6," but it's not looking good for the high FPS enthusiasts.

Rockstar Games and a gameplay analysis of GTA 6 confirm 30 FPS target

At the time of writing, Rockstar Games hasn't officially come out with specifics about the performance of "GTA 6" on console. However, according to content creators who attended a preview event at Rockstar North back in August, the co-director of the studio, Rob Nelson, insinuated that "GTA 6" wouldn't be able to reach 60 FPS at launch in November. While things might have changed between then and now, it seems highly likely that "GTA 6" will be capped at 30 FPS on console.

This suggestion from Rockstar Games is also supported by a recent analysis done by Digital Foundry. The company fully analyzed the "GTA 6" Extended Look showcase that originally aired on Netflix and determined that the entirety of the gameplay ran at 30 FPS. Even when Digital Foundry downloaded the raw video file of the gameplay that was uploaded by Rockstar, 30 FPS was the cap.

In its report, Digital Foundry expressed that Rockstar is likely targeting 30 FPS in order to support the astounding level of detail in "GTA 6," saying: "It's clear that the focus was absolutely maximizing the level of visual detail at a fixed 30 FPS frame rate on all platforms. The rendering, simulation and presentation have all been tuned around that constraint – and the result is an unprecedented level of density, material quality and world coherence, with trade-offs landing primarily in image quality and animation smoothness rather than systemic scale or fidelity."

The report also goes on to say that "GTA 6" looks like "the most impressive example of real-time game rendering" the company has ever analyzed. It's reported that the 30 FPS target is maintained for a majority of the gameplay, and frame drops are extremely rare.

Could GTA 6 ever run at 60 FPS on console?

While the 30 FPS cap might be disappointing to some players, Rockstar has not ruled out that a 60 FPS Performance Mode could arrive on PlayStation and Xbox in the future, post-launch. However, Digital Foundry warns that a Performance Mode targeting 60 FPS might not even be possible given the scale and detail level in "GTA 6."

Their report adds: "The evidence suggests that the game maintains its 33.3ms cadence with care, and Rockstar has clearly spent immense effort balancing CPU and GPU workloads to fully saturate the hardware. That makes a 60fps version extremely unlikely on console hardware — there's no way to regain enough GPU and particularly CPU time to make a 16.7ms update rate work without compromising the world."

So, while we've seen Rockstar Games work magic before, a 60 FPS mode on console might be pushing the limit for what's possible with "GTA 6." We could also see a scenario where Rockstar only releases a 60 FPS mode for the PlayStation 5 Pro, as that's currently the most powerful console on the market. In addition, Digital Foundry states that "GTA 6" could look even better on the PS5 Pro. Still, without firm details, even that console could be limited in what it can handle.
