The Rare Enemy You May Never Have Encountered In Final Fantasy 2

The world of Final Fantasy is one packed with lore, mythic settings, imaginative creatures, and, of course, brutal bosses. It's a beloved RPG series that redefined the genre in the West, especially after the release of Final Fantasy 7. Not only is the seventh game the most favored in the series (and the creepiest, depending on how you look at it), but it recently received a remake that was praised by critics. Even more impressive, the Final Fantasy 7 remake snagged six nominations at The Game Awards in 2020.

Although gamers in the West were in love with Final Fantasy 7, it wasn't the seventh game in the series for anyone outside of Japan. A few Final Fantasy titles weren't localized for many years, including the first sequel. It's probably not too common to find someone in the West who has played Final Fantasy 2, but even less common is a particularly rare enemy whose debut you likely haven't seen.

A less friendly Iron Giant

The Iron Giant isn't the beloved '90s animated character from Warner Brothers but rather an enemy you may have encountered while playing Final Fantasy games. These formidable foes are massive beasts who are cast in blue or red metal. They first appeared in Final Fantasy 2, though it is unlikely you ever encountered one in that particular title. Iron Giants occupy the sixth floor in the last dungeon of the game, and should you defeat one, you will be handsomely rewarded.

Of course, beating an Iron Giant is no easy task. Not only do they have extremely low encounter rates and exist only in one area of Final Fantasy 2, but they are incredibly hearty, sporting a whopping 180 in defense. If that wasn't bad enough, they are a bit cowardly and prone to run from encounters if you can't finish them off in a timely manner.

Should you be fortunate enough to find an Iron Giant and you want the loot they drop, using ice or lightning will be your best bet.
