This Third-Person Shooter Is Getting A Second Chance On Xbox Games With Gold

If you missed Lost Planet 2 when it arrived on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC in 2010, you've got another chance to experience the monster-hunting third-person shooter. Microsoft has announced that the Capcom title will join the Games with Gold roster in February for free, alongside the remastered Resident Evil and Gears 5.

Lost Planet 2 arrived to a lukewarm critical reception in 2010. It garnered its best Metacritic scores for the Xbox 360 version, although most of these reviews were still middling. In general, most found the controls difficult to master and the campaign to be bogged down by weak storylines and forgettable characters. However, the Lost Planet 2 did have some dedicated fans who were willing to look past these flaws to appreciate the co-op offerings. In a highly positive review, Game Informer called Lost Planet 2 "one of gaming's top co-op experiences."

Microsoft's decision to include Lost Planet 2 in the Games with Gold package for February means that it will be that much easier to get friends together to play the game at its best. Games with Gold makes at least two games available for all Xbox Live Gold subscribers every month and often includes legacy titles initially released on the Xbox or Xbox 360, such as Lost Planet 2. Considering that Xbox Live Gold is required to play pretty much anything on Microsoft's family of consoles, this means that any of your Xbox Live contacts will also have access to Lost Planet 2 for free from Feb. 16 to Feb. 28.

However, with a total of five games arriving for free throughout February on Games with Gold, Xbox owners have a decent amount of choice. Anyone looking for a more recent co-op experience might want to give the critically acclaimed Gears 5 a look. As the most recent entry in one of Microsoft's signature franchise, the game has also been optimized for the Xbox Series X|S, making it an excellent choice for anyone looking to show off their new console. Gears 5 will be available the entire month of February.

Anyone looking for an excellent solo experience might want to check out the remastered HD version of the original Resident Evil, which will also be available for free throughout February. Also available are Indiana Jones and the Emperor's Tomb from Feb. 1 to Feb. 15, and Dandara: Trails of Fear Edition, a Metroidvania 2D platformer first released in 2018, which will become available on Feb. 16 through March 15.
