Marvel's Wolverine Post-Credits Scene, Explained

While the consensus about "Marvel's Wolverine" from the general public is still being formed given that the game just released today, but early buzz was mixed to say the least. Reviews generally leaned positive as a whole, but many critics still took the game to task for its various gameplay and pacing issues as well as it being linear instead of open world. Opinions on the game's story — and its characterization of its titular star — were uneven, though those aspects were generally considered some of the game's stronger components. And on that note, the way the game ends has also drawn strong opinions, as well as a bit of confusion.

Needless to say, spoilers ahead if you haven't finished "Wolverine" yet and still intend to. But if you've already powered through the game's not especially long main story and were left scratching your head at the post-credit reveals — or you were scared off by the negativity surrounding the game leading up to its release and would rather just know how it ends without actually playing it — we discuss the game's two end credit scenes below and what they mean both for this game and for the future of the franchise. 

There are actually two different post-credit scenes in "Wolverine." The first one is shown to anyone who beats the game, no matter what other benchmarks they achieved or extras they unlocked. In that one, it is revealed that Sabretooth has found another Helix Engine, different from the one that is seen during the main game. We learn during the game that a Helix Engine can activate a person's dormant mutant gene, and in the post-credit sequence, Apocalypse's voice in Sabretooth's head has led him to this apparent back-up Helix Engine. We then see Sabretooth looking at a tall, glowing-eyed figure figure obscured by the dustiness of the cave he has entered, which seems to be Apocalypse himself — strongly hinting that Apocalypse will be a major presence in whatever form the sequel to "Wolverine" takes.

As for the second, "secret" post-credits scene, that one is only viewable to players who finish every Nightmare Door trial and earn a rank of bronze or higher. This one takes place 75 years prior to the events of the game, at the farm where Logan and Jean Grey were living together at the time. Jean then explains how she and Logan have known each other for several centuries, and each time she dies and is subsequently reborn, she and Logan inevitably find each other again. At the end, we see the two of them actually sharing a rare moment of true peace and happiness, something that has mostly eluded them throughout their long and apparently forever doomed relationship.
