Greedfall 2: The Dying World - What We Know So Far

There are so many action RPGs out there that it can be hard for a new series to stand out, especially ones made by smaller studios. That's why it's so impressive that "GreedFall" managed to break through andmake such an impact on the gaming community. Spider Games released the Colonial-themed fantasy game back in 2019 and fans instantly fell in love with the Bioware-style narrative design combined with a unique setting, tactical gameplay and an intricate class-based combat system. The tasks players with recruiting various companions (most of whom could be romanced), and make tricky choices across the lengthy campaign that would ultimately impact which of the multiple endings the player would get.

Now, the studio has two new games on the way. The first is "Steelrising," a new action-adventure RPG set in a technologically-advanced alternate version of 1789 Paris, and the second is none other than "GreedFall 2: The Dying World." The sequel to the game that arguably put Spider Games on the map was just announced by the publisher, Nacon, and fans are already eager to know what the next chapter in the series has in store.

Is there a release date for Greedfall 2?

The first thing fans want to know when they hear that there is going to be a "GreedFall 2" is when they can expect to play it. Well, it looks like they will have to wait a couple of years. Nacon's announcement revealed that the game would launch sometime in 2024. This is a pretty reasonable timeframe, given that the game is likely still in the earlier stages of development. It's worth noting though, that IGN, Xbox and PlayStation's listings for the announcement trailer all state that the game is planned for release in 2023, so Nacon's timetable may have only recently shifted to the later date.

Then there's the question of which platforms the game will be available on. The announcement states that "GreedFall 2" will be available on PC and consoles. The title already has a page on Steam that is allowing PC gamers to add the title to their wishlist, but it remains to be seen which specific consoles will get the new title. Both the Xbox and PlayStation official YouTube accounts have shared the announcement trailer, which makes the newer PS5 and the Series X|S seem like obvious candidates.

Is there a trailer for Greedfall 2?

The announcement trailer for "GreedFall 2: The Dying World" is fairly short and consists exclusively of cinematic imagery with no dialogue or voice over. The video opens on a camp of the native people known as the Yecht Fradi performing a magic ritual in a wooded glade as a beastly Lewolan rests nearby. The viewer then sees several colonials wielding rifles as they hunt through the woods, following their hounds. The video flashes back and forth between these two scenes several times, until we see the Yecht Fradi following their Lewolan through the woods. At this point, the Lewolan and the hound seem to smell each other at the same time. The colonials then charge at the Yecht Fradi, guns raised — and the screen cuts to black with the sound of a gunshot.

The screen then fades back in to reveal prison cells in the cargo holds of a ship containing the captured Yecht Fradi. The camera pans away from the prisoners and out the window to reveal the ship is taking them back to what is presumably the old continent of Gacane. This seems to indicate that much of the new game's story will revolve around captured people from Teer Fradee being forced into servitude.

What is the story of Greedfall 2?

In spite of the name, it seems that "GreedFall 2" is actually a prequel to the events that take place in the first game. The announcement from Nacon states, "The story starts three years before the events of the first game and the adventures of De Sardet." This makes a lot of sense from a storytelling perspective, since the multiple endings from the first game might make it difficult to pull off a canonical continuation.

The announcement also confirms that the story will indeed be centered around a captured native who is forcibly taken to Gascane. "In this old world ravaged by war and scarred by the Malichor plague and the political scheming of the different factions," the post states, "you must regain your freedom and control of your own destiny. Using diplomacy, cunning or combat, as well as help from allies you make, it's up to you to end one man's ambitions of conquest, which could spell the end for the continent and your island." This seems to indicate that there will once again be in-depth role playing elements and choice-based dialogue that will allow the player to conquer obstacles in a variety of different ways.

What will the gameplay be like in Greedfall 2?

While the trailer doesn't explicitly show any gameplay, Nacon's announcement sheds a little more light on what players can expect. "Continuing the winning formula of the first game," it states, "'GreedFall 2' is an RPG that focuses on story and player choice but also includes new gameplay in the form of more tactical combat and revisits the unique universe created by its predecessor." The publisher didn't go into any more detail as to how Spider Games is going about making the combat more tactical, but just the mention of it is enough to raise some questions. This is a particularly interesting distinction for Nacon to point out, as many have already praised the original "GreedFall" for the tactical nature of its combat. It sounds like Nacon is leaning into what people loved.

It can most likely be assumed that the "GreedFall 2" will otherwise operate similarly to the first installment, with Warrior, Technical, and Magic classes offering a variety of combat styles for those situations where stealth and negotiation fall through.
