  • John grew up playing countless Nintendo classics, but "Pokémon Mystery Dungeon" sold him on the emotional potential of video games and inspired him to write about them.
  • Speculating and theorizing on the content of upcoming games has become one of John's favorite varieties of articles. Much of it stems from untamable anticipation for the next Zelda game or Super Smash Bros. character reveal, prompting many a deep dive.
  • Watching videos on the development of games by the likes of DidYouKnowGaming helped John cultivate an appreciation for the history of the game itself: cut content, development difficulties, and the odd origins of characters—all of which John has written about since then.

Experience

John's career truly began in high school when one of his teachers relaunched their school paper, leading to John producing some art and feature pieces, including a preview and predictions story on The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Outside of his high school paper, he also wrote a mix of features and more traditional news pieces for his hometown paper over several years. He delivered on a similar mix of articles for his college paper, the Massachusetts Daily Collegian, and expanded into the business world with articles for Entrepreneur & Innovation Exchange: an online academic journal. All of these experiences combined have helped him become a more well-rounded writer overall. These past few years, John has also worked as a freelance video editor, which has given him greater appreciation for feeding the visual senses in his writing.

Education

John graduated from the University of Massachusetts Amherst in 2021 with a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism and a Certificate in Film Studies, both of which helped him hone his rhythm and flow for storytelling across mediums.
